2017 Mazda CX-5

Mazda is a manufacturer that's definitely on an upward curve right now, and even a quick glance at the all-new, second-generation 2017 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover tells you why. The Mazda CX-5 was only launched in 2012 so it's pretty soon to get a second-generation of this stylish crossover. But Mazda has seen fit to bring us an all new version of its fuel efficient SUV, so here's what to expect.



It's probably fair to say there really wasn't anything wrong with last year's Mazda CX-5, which is probably why this all-new second-generation model isn't a massive departure from what we already had. The exterior and the interior are now even more stylish, the ride is even quieter, and the standard engine has been updated. Although it's not available at the launch of the 2017 Mazda CX-5, there is going to be a diesel option for the first time following later in the year.


Mazda makes fantastically good-looking vehicles these days, and the Mazda CX-5 is certainly no exception. It's a lot sleeker, sportier and more contemporary in its design than many of its rivals, but you'd probably have to see a 2016 next to a 2017 model for the differences to appear obvious. That's not a criticism though, as it was already such a beautiful design it would have been more than a little sacrilegious to mess around with it too much. The familiar trapezoidal grille is still very much front and center, so the subtle changes are the sheet metal bends along the sides, the chrome accents underneath the window and the grille now being slightly canted with the badge floating in the center.


At the time of launch there's just the one engine for the Mazda CX-5, although a new diesel unit is on the way later in the year. The standard engine is an updated version of the 2.4-liter inline-four, which puts 187 horsepower and 185 lb.-ft. of torque at your disposal and is said to have been reworked to be more responsive. The diesel will arrive in the fall and it will be a 2.2-liter four-cylinder, but we'll have to wait for more details. The manual transmission has now been dropped, so all versions of the Mazda now have a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available.

Trims and features

There are currently just three straightforward trim levels of Mazda CX-5, which are Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. Standard equipment includes: a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system; Bluetooth connectivity; LED headlights; power windows, door locks, and mirrors; a rearview camera; keyless ignition and a pair of USB chargers for charging those larger devices. Mazda expects the Touring model to be the most popular trim, which adds a leatherette interior, acoustic front windows, a power adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, an upgraded six-speaker sound system, rear USB ports and blind-spot monitors to the standard Sport trim. The Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring then gets you the preferred and safety packages, leather seats and 19-inch wheels as standard, and there isn’t much else that can be added to its impressive feature set other than the available Premium Package.

Fuel economy

The fuel-efficiency of the 2017 Mazda CX-5 is every bit as good as we'd expect it to be, with front-wheel drive versions rated at 24 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway and 27 mpg combined.* Adding the extra capability of all-wheel drive inevitably makes a difference, but even then the numbers are still impressive at 23 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg combined.
